Refrigerators are an indispensable part of modern life Frost forms around the cooling coils of the freezer when the water vapor touches the cold coils If the frost is allowed to build up, it can get very thick and there would not be enough space for food stuff The earlier models required manual defrosting but the newer ones are frost free which has lessened the labor of maintaining the refrigerator

The frost free refrigerator basically has three components, like the timer, heating coil and a temperature sensor All three work in tandem for the smooth automatic defrosting of the refrigerator The heating coil is turned on by the timer every few hours or so These coils are entwined among the freezer coils The heat melts the frost off the coils and when all of it is melted the sensor turns off the heat as soon as the temperature goes above 32 degree F This is how the whole process of defrosting basically works

In most of the frost free refrigerators the cooling coils are within the freezer compartment The heater is either woven into or set on these coils The timer normally is found at the back of the compressor in the older models but the newer ones may have them in front of the refrigerator or inside it

Earlier, the timer would go off for defrosting whether it was required or not But, heating the coils at every six hours or so would consume a lot of energy But, now, with energy reserves depleting at an alarming rate and energy-efficiency being the norm, the latest frost free refrigerators have timers which are controlled electronically and are called adaptive defrost control

The period of defrosting is not fixed The component is programmed to take into account the usage of the refrigerator and the time it takes for the coils to be defrosted The device then calculates the necessary time required and adapts itself accordingly

Frost free refrigerators have certainly made life simpler With manual refrigerators, one had to be constantly on the vigil to prevent the refrigerator from frosting all over It needed the emptying out of the entire contents of the refrigerator and then letting the frost melt over a couple of hours or so Then the messy draining and dripping of water had to be taken care of The full refrigerator had to be wiped dry, the contents put back again and only then could the refrigerator be re-started

Some really older models required overnight manual defrosting for the entire frost to melt away This was especially tedious as the food had to be either consumed totally or some way had to be found to keep it fresh under the circumstances The whole process was labor-intensive and time-consuming One had to be physically present to do all this work Now, no one has the time to do so much actual physical labor and thanks to advanced technology, we are rid of the tedium of manual defrosting

Frost free refrigerators are easier to clean and maintain and they also have the upper hand as far as energy saving is concerned A properly designed frost free refrigerator uses less energy than the cyclic defrost ones which have to be manually defrosted Also, the price of these frost free models is not very much more than the direct cool ones Frost free refrigerators are an integral part of the modern, busy lifestyle now and there scarcely will be a household which does not possess one

The advent of the microwave oven has revolutionised cooking; jacket potatoes can be cooked in 5 minutes rather than an hour and whole meals can be reheated at the push of a button It is the perfect fast food technology for our fast paced lifestyle But how did this amazing convention come about? It wasn’t the desire to nuke our food that spurred on the science world when investigating microwave technology; it was the need for communication In fact, microwaves are still used today in radio communication and wireless applications such as Bluetooth technology

The discovery of microwaves, which are part of the electromagnetic wave spectrum, was in 1868 by a scientist working on the equations that predicted their existence by a colleague It was the Ultra High Frequency that was detected by fairly basic equipment It wasn’t until the early 1940s that a happy accident happened that saw one scientist stumble upon the potential for microwave technology to cook food Whilst conducting a test on a radar set that used microwaves, a scientist realised that the radar had caused a chocolate bar in his pocket to melt

This spurred investigation into the use of this technology to cook food Initially the experiment involved successfully popping popcorn and boiling eggs - one of which exploded in the face of a fellow technician These events lead to the creation of an enclosed area that could contain the radiation; because the technology had the potential to cook anything in the air around it, the health and safety implications are enormous

Food is heated by dielectric heating, aggravating the water molecules present in food and causing them to heat up This is usually a uniform approach, cooking the food evenly throughout, unlike other methods that cook the food from the outside and then inwards This method has the benefit of being much quicker than conventional cooking methods, but does not have the capability to brown food The machines niche lies in the reheating of already prepared foods, first gaining popularity in the catering industry

The first commercial microwave oven came into existence during the 1950s, and was a whopping 6 feet tall and consumed almost triple the energy than a machine today does It was also incredibly expensive, but the potential was evident and as with all technology the oven became smaller, more efficient and less expensive By the early 1970s, 1 per cent of the population had microwaves in their home That figure rose to twenty five per cent in the mid eighties and currently sits at around ninety per cent of households in the United States owning one

Both commercial and domestic versions of the microwave oven work in the same way, but the popularity in the up market catering industry is limited due to the way the food is cooked Although there have been many recipes written specifically for this type of cooking, results for recipes that call for certain methods that enhance flavour, for example browning, are just not attainable This has resulted in microwaved food being regarded as inferior, and associated mainly with fast food at home, for example TV dinners, and the fast food industry such as major burger chains

You most likely have or know people that have hammocks or hammock swings While you are just lying there peacefully and rocking back and forth, have you ever wondered how hammocks came to be? Did you know that early hammocks were actually pieces of furniture rather than recreational products? Sure, us American’s are great at making someone’s idea better, but understanding the history of hammocks is an interesting piece of the past

From all accounts it is widely agreed upon that hammocks originated over 1000 years ago in Central America by the Mayan Indians The Mayans were great visionaries They are credited with creating a very accurate calendar as well making advances is mathematics and astronomy Making a hammock 1000 years ago wasn’t like going to your local fabric store The Mayans had to use what was available to them It is recorded that the earliest hammocks were created out of Hamack tree bark The bark of a Hamack tree is soft yet tough so it provided the strength needed for support As the years went on, they started using a plant called Sisal The Sisal plant was better than Hamack bark since it was easier to find and the plant itself could become more pliable when worked over by hands The softer material also made the hammocks much more comfortable than the earlier bark version

The hammock made its way from Central America north via a wide network of trade routes Hammocks were traded to the north for things like food, fur and building materials The American Indians were very early adopters of hammocks It is believed that that early settlers in America stole the hammocks from the Indians as they pushed the Indians out of their homes

From all accounts it is widely agreed upon that hammocks originated over 1000 years ago in Central America by the Mayan Indians The Mayans were great visionaries They are credited with creating a very accurate calendar as well making advances is mathematics and astronomy Making a hammock 1000 years ago wasn’t like going to your local fabric store The Mayans had to use what was available to them It is recorded that the earliest hammocks were created out of Hamack tree bark The bark of a Hamack tree is soft yet tough so it provided the strength needed for support As the years went on, they started using a plant called Sisal The Sisal plant was better than Hamack bark since it was easier to find and the plant itself could become more pliable when worked over by hands The softer material also made the hammocks much more comfortable than the earlier bark version
