Know Your Home Furnishings

If you have never put up a wall mural before, this information is for you. If you have put up a wall mural before but had a rough time of it, well, this information is also for you. If you follow my steps closely you will find that this project can be easily accomplished without any unnecessary setbacks.

First let me start out by giving you a list of helpful items you will need to make this wall mural installation almost effortless. You will need a ladder (to get to the top of the wall), a pencil, a ruler (25 foot retractable will do), a razor knife (to cut the paper where needed), wallpaper paste (comes in powder to be mixed with water), a container (to mix the wallpaper paste with water), a yard measuring stick, a plumb line (is the chalk coated string to produce a level line), a brush (4 to 6 inches wide) to apply the wallpaper paste to the wallpaper and a cloth (a soft cloth such as a terrycloth towel) to brush the paper flat and remove air bubbles once each panel of the wall mural is applied to the wall. Now that you have your list of helpful items we will continue on to the next step.

Before you ever think about applying the mural to the wall, you have to make sure that the surface of the wall is prepared properly. Now is the time to go over to the wall you will be applying the mural to and make sure to remove any old wallpaper that may be on the wall. It will also be necessary to clean any dust that may be on the wall. If there happens to be any holes or cracks in the wall, patch these holes and cracks with wall spackling or wall plaster. If you are good at spackling, there is no need to sandpaper the surface of the wall to make a flat surface. With using plaster to patch your wall cracks and holes, most of the time you will need to sandpaper your patch in order to produce a flat surface on the wall. It is a good idea to make sure the wall has 2 good coats of latex paint in order to have the proper adhesive properties for the wallpaper paste.   

Now you can prepare the mural by laying out the panels in the correct order on a floor near by. By matching the correct colors and patterns on the floor you save time and eliminate any frustration of not being able to find the correct piece when applying the wallpaper mural to the wall. This make for a much easier wall application.

So far you have your tools and your wall is patched, painted and ready for your mural. Now it is time to prepare the wallpaper paste. Most of the time your mural will come with the powder to make the paste. Make sure you do exactly as the directions suggest, so the texture of the paste is at the correct consistency to brush onto the mural panels and the wallpaper mural will adhere to the wall properly. So far so good!

Now it is time to place the first panel on the wall. It is always a good technique to start off with the top left panel. In order to place the first panel in the correct position, measure the length and width of the panel. Mark the panel dimensions on the top left section of the wall where the first panel will be.

Next, using the plumb-line make a line on the wall where the right side length of the panel will be once the panel is applied to the wall. Using a ladder, go to where the ceiling and wall meet. Align the string of the plumb-line to where the right side length will be once the first panel is in place. Have someone hold the other end of the plumb-line tightly where the wall meets the floor.

Make sure the plumb-line is in the correct position from the ceiling to the floor. With your free hand, pull the plumb-line straight back from the wall like a bow and let the plumb-line snap back to the wall. This will cause the colored chalk in the string to make a straight line down the wall. Now you have a straight line to work with for your first row of mural panels going down to the floor. Do this same procedure with each new top panel.

When applying the paste, first apply a thin coat of paste to the section of wall you are about to place the panel. Next apply a thin coat of paste to the panel you are about to put up always brushing from the center out to the edges of the panel. Do NOT apply a thick heavy coat of paste to your wallpaper mural panel. This will only cause the paper to become too soaked and could cause a tear in the wallpaper.  

After applying each panel, take a gentle, soft, dry cloth and brush the panel from the center out to the edges in order to remove any air bubbles that may have collected under the panel. Overlap each panel ¼ inch in order to adjust for shrinkage that will occur after each panel dries.  

Always be prepared to finish this project in one session. For the best conditions to put up any wallpaper mural, the ideal room temperature will be between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The room conditions should be without any air drafts. Only after the mural is completely up on the wall and dry, should you go ahead and do all the necessary trimming of the edges with your razor knife. If you find any excess paste on the front of the mural, remove by wiping off with a damp soft cloth.

The only thing left to do now is sit back, relax and enjoy your finished project. Oh yeah, you can also call some friends over to admire your work…

I love to feel totally relaxed, almost comatose. My day from start to finish is a whirlwind, so my refuge is the master bath adjoined to my bedroom. It has come to be my safe haven and a place to escape and unwind. The rest of my family knows to leave me alone when I shut the door.

Designing this room has taken many hours to get everything exactly the way I wanted it. From the mirror above the sink to the candles around the tub, it all fits together like a glove. The most exhausting part of this decorating venture was deciding on the wall covering. I had my heart set on wallpaper but was reluctant since I had been told that moisture and humidity can cause the wallpaper to peel.

Looking at other options such as tile and paint left me feeling empty not alive. I still found myself thumbing through wallpaper books and magazines. To my delight, if I went with vinyl wallpaper keeping it away from the wet areas I could have my cake and eat it to. You see, vinyl wallpaper is splash proof but not water proof. If the bathroom has sufficient ventilation and all edges are correctly pasted it can withstand this environment. Vinyl does have many attributes such as washabilty, scrubabilty and durability if placed wisely.

To compete with other wall covering, wallpaper manufacturers have created many new designs such as the slate effect, stone effect, tile effect, water splash and mosaic effect. There are unlimited colors and patterns and one to fit any mood your after. Since it was unwise to hang the wallpaper on all the bathroom walls, I went with a combination of all three, wallpaper with accent borders, tile and paint.

It is amazing how this simple decorative wallpaper has transformed my bathroom from a utilitarian space to my domestic oasis. It is so important for the over all ambience it just makes the entire room special.

I have a sitting room in the master bath, that upon the walls, I placed a vinyl wallpaper of a vintage sea foam and gold stripe pattern. Above it was an antique look of imperial bath tubs with the classic black and white tile floor. To help this pattern flow, on half of the wall, I choose the same design in tile around the bath. Above the bath I merely painted the wall in the same hue as the imperial bath. Neutral colors like white, beige, or yellow help make the room look larger and feel airy. The patterns and colors should compliment each other. Across from my tub I choose a solid beige color to make the room not look busy but give me that peaceful luxurious feeling that I longed for.

One of my best friends wanted a room of her own and it became her mission. She ended up buying wallpaper and wallpaper borders with a nautical theme. There were pictures of boats, sea shells, fish, birds and sea creatures. It was the next best thing to actually heading out to sea.

We both choose prepasted paper that was easy to apply and will be easy to remove when we need a change. You do not need a professional. The most important factor is to purchase enough. You must also prepare your walls and get them smooth and in good condition. It was also quite affordable and if applied correctly outlasts paint for approximately five years. This decorating technique adds value to your home and shows off your creativity and lets your personality shine.

There are many reasons to hate your bed. I’m sure you can think of some right now. Hating your bed doesn’t mean that you hate it because you don’t like it. You may hate your bed because you enjoy being in it too much and you can’t get anything else done. Well, no matter the reason here are some great reasons why you should hate your bed.

1.) Hate your bed because it creaks. - Yes, your bed tends to creak at night when the connecting hardware has worked its way loose or two pieces of the bed are rubbing together when you move around on the bed to get more comfortable. Annoying? Oh, yes and worse there are often few ways to minimize the creak. Maybe that creak is coming from a floor board? Don’t get me started.

2.) Hate your bed because of the mattress. - Your mattress is old, lumpy, unsupportive and evey morning you wake up it feels like your back it being poked by little sharp nails. You hate waking up to this feeling and just wish you could throw the whole thing out the window. Yes, hate your mattress.

3.) Hate your bed because your sheets slip off. - Maybe the bed has a really strong polyurethane that allows everything that comes in contact with it to simply slip off. You wake up in the middle of the night only to find blankets and sheets all over the floor. Maybe we should just hate our sheets at this point.

4.) Hate your bed because you’re too old for it. - No I’m not taking about in your later years, I’m taking about hitting your teens and discovering that tiny twin bed just isn’t long enough for you. Worse, your room is too small for anything bigger. Keep banging your feet on that tiny footboard. If this is you, then you’re are allowed to hate your bed.

5.) Hate your bed because it blocks everything. - Yoru bedroom is adequete in size but your bed seems to block the heating/air vents, windows and closet doors. It seems to be in the way all of the time. You try to get around it but alot of effort is required. Maybe we just hate this room.

6.) Hate your bed because it’s ugly. - This may not have been your fault. Twenty years ago your parents may have thought this was a stylish bed that would last the ages. They were right, the thing is still going and when cowboys and indians were popular the wagon wheel headboard and little cowboy hats were great. Now you’re dating in college and this bed is likely to be a major turn off when bringing that special someone home. Oh yes, hate your bed.

7.) Hate your bed because because it’s hard to get into. - Climbing into bed for you really is climbing into bed. When you get ready at night you have to track down your gear which includes ropes, gloves, carabiners, cams, pick ax and a steady supply of fluids before you make the climb into your bed. We’re not sure what the manufacturer of these mattresses and boxsprings had in mind but it apparently didn’t include built in side ladders to get you into bed. Sure, go ahead and hate the bed.

8.) Hate your bed because someone puked on it. - Parties happen, it’s a simple fact. Your party guests are throughout the house. You’re just having a great time enjoying some drinks and conversation. One of your party patrons rushes up stairs through your bedroom to the sounds of heaves and splatters. You rush upstairs only to discover your bed took the brunt of it. Pretty gross actually. Don’t hate your bed. Hate the guy puking in your bathroom.

9.) Hate your bed because its comfortable. - There is nothing better than having a really comfortable bed. There is nothing worse than family members knowing about it and wanting to use it before you do. Your bed sits in the bedroom while you’re away at school. You return for the the summer only to find your brother or sister has “acquired” it away from you. Hate your bed, maybe. Always keep the comfortable ones close.

10.) Hate your bed because your pillows disappear. - You’re in a nice restful sleep. You turn your body over and your head hits mattress. You come to, only to discover… no pillow. It has slipped off of your bed once again. You reach down behind the bed and pull it back up and try to get comfortable all over again. Hate your bed or just that the pillows keep pulling a Houdini?

There are many reasons to hate your bed. Some good and some bad. Just remember that you have some control over the things you hate. These things will help you to develop a sense though for things you really like about your bed and the next time you replace your bed you can address the things you hate by avoiding those things in your next bed. Do I hate my bed? Maybe I do or maybe I just strongly dislike it alot.
