Find Window Blinds That Fit Your Personal Style

Filed Under: home furnishings    by: admin

Author : Christine Harrell

Room decor requires balance between form and function Window blinds block light, save energy, and protect privacy If that’s all you needed you could nail boards over your windows Instead you want window shades that are functional and reflect your personal style

The problem is that many people have trouble defining their personal styles

Draw Inspiration From Standard Styles

There are many standard decors out there such as Queen Anne, Contemporary, or American Country Looking at showrooms in these styles can give you a feel for what you want such as a palette, decorative accents, or materials for your window treatments

Although predefined styles can help you focus, they aren’t your style Be careful about slavishly following someone else’s ideas of taste You are going to be living in this room so you need to love it

A Nice Look, But Is It Practical to Live In?

Though you’ll want your room to be gorgeous, you’ll also need the decor to fit your lifestyle practically Some styles, particularly those on decorating television shows, are simply not practical for most families

Kids are often the largest factor in room decor choices It might be a safety issue, opting for cordless window blinds rather than traditional ones Or it might be the choice of material for easy cleaning

Other than children, each home has additional needs In the frozen north or the scorching south, energy efficiency is going to be high on the list A bedroom with an east-facing window might need light-blocking blinds or treatments, while another room with a dark northern exposure would benefit from sheer window blinds that protect privacy while letting in a lot of light

How Searching Through Your Wardrobe Can Help You Decide on Window Treatments

One of the problems with defining your own style is there is often a difference between what we think we want and what we really want Clothes are something we change every day so it is easy to go through a variety of looks and settle on the one that fits our life Your wardrobe says a lot about what you really think is important

For example, you see a magazine photo spread that shows a house decorated in an elegant, formal style Yet you look through your closet and realize you don’t have a lot of elegant clothes Your wardrobe isn’t “jeans and a t-shirt” but tends toward flowing lines and trendy patterns You might find an elegant room stifling Over time you will start making changes to the room to adapt it to better suit your personality Instead make it that way from the start by looking at window treatments that have a more casual look

As with any decision of personal style, choosing window treatments isn’t a decision made in a flash Take the time to compare not just many styles but many manufacturers such as Hunter Douglas and Levolor Find the option that fits your personality and create the room you will love to live in

Look at the Size of a Full Mattress Before You Buy

Filed Under: home furnishings    by: admin

Author : Warren Wong

When you want to buy a new bed for yourself, for another member of your family or to place in a spare bedroom, you have several options in the size of the mattress Compare the various sizes of mattresses to see which one best meets your needs and the size of the room you have available The size of a full mattress is the same as that of a double mattress because the terms double and full are usually used interchangeably However, it is best to ask about the difference because some mattress manufactures use the term full to mean a mattress that is a little larger than a twin, but smaller than a double or larger than a double yet smaller than a queen These mattresses usually have the designation Full/Double or Full/Queen

A twin size mattress measures 39 inches by 75 inches You can also get extra long twin mattresses that are 80 inches in length The shorter mattresses are best for small children and the longer ones are often used in college dorm rooms However because the mattress is not of normal length, the bedding is often hard to find and is more expensive

The full mattress measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long This means these mattresses are only 15 inches wider than a twin size bed They are great for one person or two small children because it is healthy to move around when you sleep However, for two adults, there is not a lot of room for both of them to sleep comfortably, especially if one of them likes to sprawl out on the mattress Each person only has a little over two feet of space on the bed, which when you think about it is not a lot of room They do fit better in a small room and the bedding is easy to buy and is less expensive

A queen size mattress measures 60 inches by 80 inches This adds 6 inches to the width and 5 inches to the length as compared to the full mattress This difference in size will definitely add to the comfort level of two adults sleeping in the same bed as well as adding to the comfort of a taller person It is not only a good choice for your own bed but would also be a perfect choice for a spare bedroom when you have another couple staying overnight Some of the bedding is sold as Full/Queen and may be too small for a queen size bed, yet too big for a double bed

The king size mattress offers the ultimate in comfort when it comes to size This mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long This gives you plenty of room to move about as well as provide space to have a child in bed with you for times when he/she wakes up in the night or is not feeling well You do need a large room for this size of mattress and the bedding is more expensive

Not All Mattress Warranties Are Created Equal

Filed Under: home furnishings    by: admin

Author : Mitch Endick

The deal on that new mattress set was too good to pass up The price was right, the delivery time was very convenient and the salesperson was friendly and helpful

Even the manufacturers warranty sounded more than reasonable - reasonable for the manufacturer that is Like most consumer goods, most bedding does come with some sort of warranty But like snowflakes, no two are alike and the devil, as they say, is in the details and the proverbial fine print

So before signing on the bottom line, it pays to know exactly what the warranty covers and most importantly, what it does not cover

The length of the manufacturers warranty should not be used as a measurement of how long the mattress will last The lifespan of the average mattress depends on a variety of factors including the quality of the foundation or box spring, the weight of the owner, the number of people who sleep on the mattress and how the mattress is handled while moving from place to place

For example, if the movers significantly bend the mattress to get it in or out of the house, there is a good chance the border wire may be bent or the spring coils could be damaged

An obvious exception on almost any warranty is abuse or neglect An automobile manufacturer may warranty the vehicles engine for 10 years, but without exception the warranty would be rendered null and void if the owner neglected to check or change the oil

The same is true for bedding warranties which will cover defects in workmanship and materials for a very specific period of time and warranties come with a variety of exceptions

Very few if any manufacturers warranties will cover the cost of transporting or shipping the item back to the factory, retail outlet or other specified location An example of damage not covered in almost all bedding warranties includes fabric, including damage caused by normal wear and tear

Using a foundation or frame that is not matched to the mattress will often void the warranty An example would be using a frame with a queen or king mattress and foundation that does not have adequate center support

Some warranties cover something called body indentations but quite often there is usually only one quarter inch that stands between an indentation that is covered and one that is not covered How an indentation is measured may be open to interpretation and what looks or even feels like a problem to you may not look like a problem to the manufacturer

If you get the mattress home and it does not feel comfortable do not look to the manufacturer or retailer for relief The presumption is that the buyer had the opportunity to try out the bedding before making the decision to buy

Always keep the sales receipt from your purchase This is very important since warranties apply to the original buyer The manufacturer would have no way of knowing whether you are original owner without the sales receipt and will not honor a warranty claim

Most bedding warranties are pro rated meaning that the amount of time the bedding was in service is taken into account when calculating the warranty claim This is similar to the formula used to pro rate the warranty on a set of automobile tires

Each manufacturers warranty is different and the best advice is to read the warranty carefully and ask questions before making a purchase decision Do not make the mistake of assuming that something is covered by the warranty and you will not be disappointed later

The Many Mattresses for Beds

A customer walks into a store and asks the clerk behind the desk about a mattress for their bed. The clerk says ok, then asks “do you want a spring mattress?” To which the customer replies “Oh, well… I actually need it for the whole year!” This little joke is all in fun but there are many new types of mattresses in the marketplace for beds that many consumers are unaware of. These new trends in mattress bring many interesting features to the typical bed and are definitely worth taking a look at. In this article we’ll examine some of the new trends in mattresses and what they can offer your bedroom.

Innerspring mattresses for beds. These mattresses are among the most traditional and classic designs in mattresses. Spring mattresses provide good support and are used well throughout the world. The first thing you’re going to come across is coil count. The coil count tells you how many coil springs are used throughout the unit. This of course varies from mattress to mattress. Typically a queen mattress with a coil count greater than 390 coils should be suitable for every night sleeping as opposed to a guest mattress. Different layers of foam and batting will be used at the surface of the mattress which will make the mattress firm or plush. Pillow top models are also available that make the mattress quite soft. Most innerspring mattresses feature a fabric quilting sewn into the mattress. There are many brands of innerspring mattress available at many different price points. You should find one that is comfortable, made for everyday use and is within your budget. Major brands include Serta, Sealy, Simmons, Spring Air and King Koil to name a few.

Viscoelastic mattresses for bed frames. Introduced over twenty years ago these mattresses started out quite pricey and were only in select higher end homes by people who could afford them. Today, there are many brands of viscoelastic mattresses and can be found in a much greater number of homes. Viscoelastic has unique properties in that the mattress is made up of material called visco cells. These cells have a memory and when they sense heat the material conforms around the heat. Your body supplies the heat and the mattress molds around you. This is different than innerspring mattresses in which you lay on top of the mattress. With visco mattresses you actually feel the mattress around you. Coverings for these mattresses can range from fabric, bamboo, cashmere or any number of materials. In recent years some customers have commented that the mattress becomes hot while laying on it. Tempur-Pedic which is a leader in viscolelastic mattresses has since created a more breathable covering to disperse heat. Its not immediately clear if other manufacturers of these mattresses have done the same. Viscoelastic mattresses have been promoted as helping those with bad backs find greater comfort. Tempur-Pedic and Dormia are just a couple of the many brands available.

Waterbed mattresses for platforms. Popular in the 1970’s waterbed mattresses are still available through select specialty stores. These mattresses of course feature water as their primary filler. Special platform frames are made that accommodate these mattresses due to the heavy nature of the mattress. In recent years the waterbed industry has come up with new innovations in design. There are several types of waterbed mattress. The hard-side waterbed mattress requires that in be surrounded by a wood/MDF system to ensure that the mattress is contained. Soft-side waterbed mattresses feature a sturdy foam around the perimeter of the mattress that allows it to keep its shape. The soft-side is the most popular waterbed mattress today. The biggest complaint about waterbeds were movement. Motion sensor technology and or tube or bladder systems were created to help reduce this movement so as to provide a more comfortable sleep.

Air mattress beds. Often thought of as that blow up mattress your grandmother uses for guests, air mattresses have actually come a long way. Select Comfort is one of the fastest growing companies offering air beds. The air mattresses feature chambers that pump and release air in and out of the mattress to help the user find the perfect firmness or softness for their sleeping needs. Referred to as finding your “Sleep Number” which starts from zero to 100. Because each user can adjust their own side each mattress provides the user with their own unique comfort. Some individuals have said that they can’t get the mattress firm enough for their needs so its best to try one out first to make sure it’s right for you. Aero Bed is another type of inflatable guest mattress.

An uncomfortable mattress can be the difference between a good night’s sleep and a bad night’s sleep on your bed. Poor sleep could lead to things like dreaming about eating a giant marshmallow and waking up to a missing pillow and feeling a little down in the mouth. Avoid this situation by picking the right mattress and you can get you the restful sleep you need and deserve.
